A Face Lift – for my Blog

By
December 20th, 2012

So, as you can probably tell, I’ve been working on my blog quite a bit lately. It’s still not 100% done, but I’m really happy with how it’s coming together. I’m coding it by hand and creating all of the graphics myself, which explains why it’s been taking so long. I don’t really have any coding experience, so I’m pretty much learning as I go. Thinking about it, I’m actually really proud of what I’ve gotten done so far! Here’s how my old blog looked, in case you can’t remember:

Drag the image into your address bar to see it full size. Every time I look at the older version, I’m so much happier with how it’s coming together. There’s still so much to do, but I can’t wait to finish it off. In case you’re wondering, I’m using WordPress and coding using a child theme based on a parent theme I found. I’m using an FTP to host all of my files but I’m uploading images through photobucket. If that’s total gibberish to you, don’t worry, I felt the same a couple of days ago! There have been moments where I’ve been beyond frustrated and have really wished that there was someone to help me out, so if you’re trying to code your own blog and are facing the same frustration, let me know! I’d be more than happy to try and help you out.

In other news, my mom teaches math and she asked me to bake math-related cupcakes for her because tomorrow is the last day before Christmas break. I decided to make “pi pie” cupcakes, and I’m actually really pleased with how they turned out!

Aren’t they adorable? I’m glad she’s taking them to school because I don’t even want to think about the amount of calories in each one of those little things – especially with all of the holiday parties that Aki and I have got coming up. Nom nom nom! Speaking of holiday parties, I put together what I think is a super cute holiday outfit and it inspired a little photoshoot. I definitely see myself rocking this look, although I’d definitely have to pair it up with a cardigan of some sort for Aki’s family!

I think I’m starting to have an unhealthy relationship with burgundy. Isn’t it such a gorgeous colour? Love love love.

Okay, so this blog post has gotten altogether too long and I should really get back to coding and designing and such! Let me know what you think of the design I’ve got going on so far, and I’ll talk to you all again super soon.

Goodbye, semester 1 of MBA

By
December 14th, 2012

I’m done. Finally.

So last year, quite a few of my law friends told me that the MBA would be a lot easier than law school was. Plain and simply, they lied. This semester was absolutely killer – the amount of assignments, tests, and exams that we had to do over these past three and a half months has been sheer ridiculousness. Don’t get me wrong, I really did enjoy business and I have learned so much this term, but I have pretty much been holed up in my room studying for 80% of the time.

Anyway, enough about that! I just wanted to let you all know that I’m done, I’m happy, and I’m back online! You can expect to see a whole lot of new and exciting content in the coming weeks – maybe even a new post later on tonight. For now, I leave you with a photo of the 145-page final report that I submitted this morning:

Revel in its beauty!

…and here’s Mipsy enjoying the snow:

Honda Indy with Robert Herjavec

By
October 2nd, 2012

I can’t believe it’s almost been three months since I went to the Honda Indy with Aki! It was the first race I had ever watched live, so exciting :) Also, there was really yummy catered food in our booth, so that made me happy.

It was really nice meeting Mr. Herjavec since I’ve always loved him on Dragon’s Den and Shark Tank. He’s always the nice guy to balance Kevin O’Leary (whom I find absolutely hilarious). I also got to meet his wife, who is totally gorgeous and seems really nice.

We started off by watching the Ferrari race (in which Robert took part). I love that we were right next to the race, I could literally see into their cars.

We were also at a corner, so we ended up seeing a car. The poor blue Ferrari drove right into a wall! It was sad seeing the poor thing getting dragged off, but kind of interesting to see how quickly all of the people ran onto the track to get it out of the way and make sure the driver was okay.

One really cool part of the day was getting to go to the pit of each Indy car. I was super happy when I saw that there was a car with my favorite number on it. Plus, it was one of GoDaddy’s cars! Thanks for hosting my webstie and having a racecar with my favorite number on it :) Woop!

We also went to see the Ferraris on display during the break between races. I still prefer Lamborghinis, but I have to admit that this is a pretty nice car.

Aki snapped a picture of me during the race. Look at our baller seats! Amazing view.

As soon as we got home, Aki fell asleep. I followed suit shortly after, it was such a tiring day! Looking back on these pictures, I kind of miss the super warm summer days. I absolutely love autumn, but I’m not too crazy about the fact that it’s already cold out.

Hello, my lovely blog readers! It has been far too long, I hope you haven’t left me for another. That would make me very sad indeed. If you’re just here to read about the Dior 500 point perk at Sephora, please skip to paragraph 6. If you’d like to hear some stories about my life, read on!

Before I get into this blog post, allow me to explain. Remember how, last year, I told you I was a law student? Well, that is still true, but I decided that a law degree just wasn’t enough for me. So, over the summer, I decided to apply for the joint JD/MBA program. Essentially, I add another year onto my law degree and I graduate with both a juris doctor and a master’s in business administration. Sounds like a good bargain, no?!

Anyway, I’ve been in school for just a bit over a month now, and goodness is it ever busy! At law school, it was fairly calm during the semester, but things would get absolutely insane around exam time. That’s what you get with 100% exams! In business school, it is completely different. Only two of my classes even have exams, and it is much more focused on small assignments throughout the year (most of them done in groups). So, in short, I am already swamped with work and trying really hard to balance everything while still taking undergrad courses to finish my major/minor in Environment and French.

Such is the life of an over-achiever.

I’ve actually really missed blogging and youtubing. It makes me happy just writing this and knowing that I’m back. I promise I won’t leave you for so long again! Anyway, back to the purpose of this blog entry.

Sephora very rarely (in my opinion) has absolutely jaw-dropping 500 point perks. The last time they had one that really took my breath away was the Buxom Beauty Passport that I blogged about in August of last year. As you can see, that was quite a while ago. This morning was another one of those jaw-dropping moments, though.

The first things I do when I wake up are check my email and brush my teeth (in that order). So, I was super happy when I woke up to an email from Sephora about a new 500 point perk featuring Dior Addict. I find that the perks that they email you about are usually the more noteworthy ones, so I was super pumped. Plus, I haven’t really been reaping the benefits of my very important beauty insider card since I’ve been so busy with school and have had no time to shop (woe is me).

Of course, I ran over to the mall to check it out right when they opened, still in my lululemon jogging attire. I was also pretty sweaty, so I hoped they would understand by the outfit that it was because I had been working out, and not just because I am a sweaty individual. Which I am not, generally. Either way, I don’t think that the Dior set was worried about whether I was sweaty or not.

They pulled out one of the Dior sets to show me, and I was immediately impressed by the packaging. It is very clean and fancy looking, a nice white box with Dior embossed in it. However, once they opened it to show me the set, I was a bit disappointed. I thought that the pieces would be much bigger, as the Buxom pieces were close to full-sized! The perfumes are pretty generous, since I don’t really wear much perfume anyway, but the lipstick is minute! It’s a shame, since that’s what I was really looking forward to.

Included in the set are two perfumes (size), a lipstick, and a “bracelet”. I was really excited when I read in the email that the set included a bracelet, but they really used this term very liberally. The bracelet is essentially a couple of thin pieces of ribbon with a star shaped silver charm that has the word “Dior” engraved in it.

I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the bracelet. I can wear it around my wrist if I wrap it around twice, but even if I tie it in a knot, it slips out and comes undone. I might try to make a cellphone charm out of it or something of the sort.

Do any of you have any ideas?

Luckily, the rest of the set is super cute. My favorite part, hands down, is the Dior Addict lipstick. It is in the colour Kiss (578) and has the same packaging as the full-sized product. The downside is that the lipstick contains very little product, and I feel like it might last a grand total of 5 applications. However, the colour is gorgeous and the packaging is adorable.

This should give you an idea of the size of the lipstick. My hands are fairly small (I’m 5’1″ and pretty proportionate). The colour is a sheer dark pink, a nice warm berry shade. I really like it, I think it would look gorgeous combined with MAC’s Creme D’Nude (which I’ve been finding a bit too pale on its own lately).

The full size version of this lipstick retails for $30 at Sephora.

As for the perfume, I love the tiny and adorable bottles, but I know that they’ll be more decorative than anything else. I really can’t handle strong perfumes, and the Dior ones are nice, but very strong. The bottles are also pretty hard to open and end up spilling on my fingers when I take the caps off.

They are so adorable, though! The pink one is the Dior Addict Eau Fraîche and the purple is the Dior Addict Eau Sensuelle. These bottles contain 0.17 oz of perfume each. The 0.67 oz size of this perfume retails for $40 at Sephora.

All in all, I am happy with the set because it is super cute, but I’m definitely not blown away by the quality. The sales girls at Sephora did tell me that they might be getting nice 500 point perks in the near future since it’s getting close to the holiday season, but I didn’t want to risk missing out on this one and being stuck with puny samples.

That’s all for now. It’s so good to be back to blogging! I’ll be back very soon :)

Today’s blog post is brought to you by a very sweaty Tali.

TMI? Perhaps, but I promise that it is relevant! Just under a month ago, I decided that it was time to stop wishing for my perfect body and time to start achieving it. I’ve never been particularly unhappy with my body, but I really haven’t been as athletic this past year as I usually am (due to an overwhelming amount of work in law school!) So, I started off by changing my diet, eating small meals many times a day, eating more veggies, not snacking late at night. My metabolism literally sped up within a couple of days and I was feeling great! I’m planning on doing a more in-depth blog post about my new diet, but for now I want to talk to the second improvement I made to my routine.

Slowly but surely, I started incorporating more workouts into my life. I started off my going to a couple of cardio classes at the gym (on top of hot yoga, which I do regularly). I added on some jogging in the mornings, as well as riding my stationary bike while I watch TV. However, I really wasn’t feeling challenged! I needed something more intense. I talked to Aki and reminded him that one of my friends from school told me that her boyfriend got her a workout called Insanity and that she was loving it. Aki agreed to look into it for me and a couple of days later it was in my hands!

Honestly, this workout is fantastic. I’m sweating as hard as I do after an intense hot yoga class! I’ve just finished my first week, which consists of a fit test, two cardio circuits, a cardio power and resistance, pure cardio, and a cardio recovery. It’s basically a whole lot of cardio with muscle work mixed in, and I am totally obsessed! What I usually don’t like about classes at the gym is that there isn’t enough cardio. We’ll be jogging or doing jacks and then we stop to lift weights and it totally kills my buzz. This is different! It is complete cardio, and it really gets my heart rate up there. I also love that I don’t need any sort of equipment, just my own body and a pair of sneakers (and a good sports bra).

I don’t want to go too in-depth about it for now, because I’ve only done it for one week, but so far so good! I’ve planning on writing more about it as I progress. What I can tell you so far is that I was not compensated to write this post, the workout is intense, and I absolutely love it!

It’s intense, but don’t be discouraged!

It was my birthday last week and I had an absolutely amazing day! Honestly, I was dreading my birthday because last year’s was somewhat of a fiasco but this one was just phenomenal. I started the day off by going to class, which put a slight damper on my mood, but my professor was a huge sweetheart and got the entire class to sing happy birthday to me! I don’t think I’ve experienced that since high school, it was adorable. After class, Aki picked me up and surprised me with a massive bag of birthday goodies!

My boyfriend and his massive bag of presents.

Had to take a picture of him with his stupid car. I actually love this car so much, I want it in bubble gum pink!

When we got to my house, I was surprised by some adorable balloons. Aki snapped a quick shot of me with them, but I had to run to get ready for lunch with my parents and Aki’s surprise afterwards!

Rumour has it I don’t wear makeup to school sometimes :O

Once I got ready, we headed out for dinner. As we were walking from our car to the restaurant, I saw this picture with the number 27 in it. I couldn’t pass up a photo-op!

My birthday outfit and the number that stalks me.

One of the highlights was the night of my birthday. Aki had told me a little while back that he had a big surprise for me and I guess you can see what that surprise was by the title of my post! He told me we’d be going to a concert, but I had no idea who we’d be going to see until we were at the Air Canada Centre and I saw somebody wearing an Aerosmith t-shirt. It was the Aerosmith Global Warming Tour! I have to say, that got me incredibly excited! I love Aerosmith and the only other concert I’ve ever been to in my life was Ricky Martin when I was 7.

She bangs…?

Anyway, I could not wait to get into that auditorium! I love that it was called the Aerosmith Global Warming Tour (being the Environmental Studies major that I am) and Aki told me that Cheap Trick was going to open for Aerosmith, so I immediately hoped that they would play I Want You To Want Me. Of course, they did, and I totally lost it and sang at the top of my lungs. I think I may have embarrassed Aki just a tad, but that’s okay.

When Aerosmith came out, I was blown away. Steven Tyler really knows how to put on a show! He was running around the stage, busting out some cheesy dance moves, yelling at the crowd, it was so awesome!

Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler in his top hat and coat. What a wonderful entrance!

Aerosmith’s stage setup was awesome!

And check out all the people that came to watch the show! Aki said that if we weren’t in the balcony, we’d have to stand the entire show. I’m so glad we were in the balcony, sitting was very nice!

Plus, we had two girls in front of us who were definitely keeping us entertained. They came in late and each had one beer per hand, although they did not look of age to be drinking to me! One of them had a huge tattoo on her shoulder that read “Daddy’s Little Girl”. They were being super loud and rowdy, pretty much falling over themselves. Sadly, they were asked to leave when daddy’s little girl lit up a cigarette. I guess it was back to watching Steven Tyler’s shenanigans for Aki and I!

When Aerosmith said goodbye, the people next to us got up and left. Aki told me that we should stay seated, though, just in case they were going to come back out. And come back out they did! Steven Tyler and Joe Perry rose out of the stage along with a gorgeous white piano. They sang “Dream On” and it was absolutely beautiful.

Silly people leaving early, they missed this beautiful song!

Perry hopped onto the piano.

Once Perry got off, Tyler had his turn on the piano.

Once that was done, the concert was over and we headed home. I was feeling a bit peckish, so we picked up some McDonald’s on the way!

Love my happy meals :)

And that was my birthday! It was such a fantastic day, and I’m hoping to record a birthday haul of all the fun goodies I got, so keep an eye out for that!

Keep an eye out for my birthday haul video!

Recently, MAC has released some really cute new collections! The heavenly creature collection is inspired by outer space and the description on the website encourages you to “discover a whole new, gorgeous galaxy of supernova shades.” My favourites from this collection are both lipsticks: MAC Venus and MAC Cut a Caper. The Beth Ditto collection is inspired by the provocative singer-songwriter by the same name. Casual colour is described as “weekend chic, M∙A∙C style.” It is soft and beautiful, and I fell in love with the lightweight all-in-one colour for cheeks and lips. Here are my three favourite lip colours from the new collections:

From left to right, MAC Venus, MAC Cut a Caper (both Lustres from Heavenly Creature), and MAC You’re Perfect Already (A Pro Longwear Lipcreme from Beth Ditto).

Here is my favourite all-in-one-colour:

MAC Lazy Sunday.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the all-in-one colour at first because I found that it really accentuated any imperfections in my lips and looked rather chalky and un-flattering. However, once I tried layering this on top of (or underneath) MAC Venus and MAC Cut a Caper, it was love at first swipe. MAC Lazy Sunday really softens any lipstick and makes it look so much nicer and creamier. I am not a huge fan of cream blush, so I probably would not wear it on my cheeks, but I see myself using this product quite a bit in conjunction with my other lippies.

MAC Venus is an absolutely gorgeous colour, albeit not one that I would normally tend to gravitate towards (get it, Heavenly Creature? Gravitate? Oh goodness, I’m so punny). I normally go for lighter, creamier shades. However, I really do think that this is a beautiful colour. It is described as a sheer yellow pink with pearl, but I really don’t think that description does it justice. It is very vibrant and really is reminiscent of a bright red Venus in the night sky.

This is what MAC Venus lipstick looks like with a coat of MAC Lazy Sunday on top. It is a gorgeous, creamy, yellow pink, which really made my teeth look phenomenal!

MAC Cut a Caper is by far my favourite colour that I have tried on in a while. On the website, it is described as a midtone peachy pink. This colour contrasts phenomenally with my fair skin. On me, it is a vibrant pinky coral. I absolutely love the finish on this one, too. It is very nice and creamy and looks very juicy on the lips. This is a perfect vacation colour!

Here is MAC Cut a Caper lipstick with a coat of MAC Lazy Sunday on top. I am obsessed with this colour! Lazy Sunday just adds so much softness to the vibrant lipstick, I see myself wearing this combination a lot during the summer!

You’re Perfect Already is a really pretty nude colour. Because it is a Pro Longwear, it required quite a bit more manipulation than the two Lustres. It dried rather quickly and became somewhat tacky, settling into the lines on my lips and turning into a bit of a mess. I was able to tame it by blotting at my lips and spreading the colour around. The photo above shows the lipcreme alone. Afterwards, I applied some Rosebud Salve on top and it wore like a charm.

These have been my favourites from the new MAC collections! What are yours?

Spring Flower Photoshoot

By
May 28th, 2012

The weather has been really nice lately so the boyfriend and I figured that the best way to celebrate our freedom was to have a cute spring photoshoot. The shoot was super fun, we went to a little park by my house where a gentle breeze kept us nice and cool. There were a couple of kids riding their bikes around the trail who told me that I looked beautiful and asked whether I was a model. I was feeling super bloated that day, so it helped bring my self esteem up quite a bit!

I hope you’ll enjoy this sneak peek at our little photoshoot as much as I enjoyed taking part in it!

And now for some super awesome photography courtesy of yours truly!

My model wasn’t too co-operative. He makes up for his lack of modelling skills with amazing boyfriend-ing skills, though :)

Now that I’m home and I have some time to relax without any school or studying in the way, it is painfully obvious to me how bad this past year has been for my fitness and general well-being.

This year has been ridiculously difficult. Law school did not come easy, and a lot of time that I would have spent outside doing activities or working out was devoted to studying. Plus, when I was studying, I was not watching what I was eating. At all.

All this to say that I will get back to the way I was last summer, fit and active, and I’ll hopefully get there by my birthday, June 27th. I have a gym membership, and I’ve already started to make use of that. I went to a muscle class, zumba, and hot yoga yesterday, and did a cardio circuit today. I can barely walk.

However, as important as going to the gym is, it’s not always practical. Therefore, I’ve found some great workouts to do at home! I want to share these with all of you, and please do let me know if you have any to share with me.

I’ve found that doing 3 sets of 30 reps of the following four exercises gives you an amazing cardio workout, and helps tone your muscles, too!

You can definitely expect updates about my progress. I will not let myself fall back into the bad habits I developed this year, it’s just not worth it. Exercise, diet, and rest are all my main priorities right now.

Math conference days 2 & 3

By
May 13th, 2012

Day 3 of the conference rolled around and I was totally missing home. I get so homesick anytime I’m away for more than a day or two! It was nice travelling, and we’d been shopping quite a bit, but home is always the most relaxing and soothing place for me, especially after working as hard as I did on my exams and my GMAT.

Here’s another shot of the view from our hotel room, so pretty!

So anyway, let me tell you all about the math conference. Honestly, attending the lectures reminded me how much I love law school! Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy math (especially statistics), but this was a conference specifically for teachers. Therefore, the lectures were mostly about teaching and how to engage students and the curriculum and such. One lecture we attended was actually all about how to structure a math question so that it interests students. I have to admit, I found it all just a tiny bit boring. But, I got to spend quality time with my mother, so it was all worth it!

It was also a nice break from wearing makeup! Here’s what I wore for day 3 of the conference:

Shirt: Forever 21
Cardigan: Wilfred from Aritzia
Scarf: American Eagle
Leggings: Forever 21
Moccasins: Capezio

Once the conference was done, we spent quite some time exploring the city. The conference was held in Kingston, Canada’s original capital. There were so many beautiful old buildings and historic sights to see! There are also nine jails within the Kingston area. Fun stuff, no?

One of the jails.

We also got to experience some really delicious dining at our hotel. The restaurant has apparently won several awards and the food was absolutely amazing! We claimed a lovely little booth and sat there every day, so cute!

Mommy at our booth.

Seafood risotto with shrimp and scallops, so yummy.

Gnocchi with grilled chicken, my fave.

Crème brûlée, my favorite dessert.

S’more platter with a homemade marshmallow, so amazing! You hungry yet?
